A Pacific Coast Highway road trip from Seattle to San Diego is one of the great drives of the world — 15 days, one direction, the ocean always to your right. This itinerary covers the full route: Seattle's waterfront and ferry crossings, the dramatic Oregon coast from Cannon Beach to Bandon, the ancient Redwood forests of Northern California, Big Sur's cliffs and Bixby Bridge, Carmel and Monterey, Santa Barbara, and finally San Diego.

This itinerary intentionally skips San Francisco and Los Angeles. Both cities deserve dedicated trips of their own — not rushed stops on a coastal drive. What remains is the route itself: fog, forest, cliffs, sun, and beach. A slow heat increase over 15 days that reveals the best of the American west coast without the urban detours.

Best time to drive the Pacific Coast Highway

The best time to drive the Pacific Coast Highway is June to September. Summer brings the clearest skies and warmest temperatures coast-wide, making the Oregon coast and Big Sur accessible and photogenic. September is an excellent alternative — slightly cooler, noticeably fewer crowds, and the light quality improves as summer haze clears. Avoid winter for Big Sur specifically: Highway 1 is subject to closures after storms, and the coastal views that make the drive worthwhile are often obscured. The Pacific Northwest section around Seattle is best in July and August when rainfall is minimal.

Where to stay along the Pacific Coast Highway

For a 15-day Pacific Coast road trip, the accommodation strategy is as important as the route itself — book everything 3 to 5 months in advance for summer travel. Big Sur has very limited options and sells out completely. Mendocino and Carmel are the same. The key stops: Seattle needs a downtown or waterfront location. Monterey is best on the water at Cannery Row. Big Sur requires booking a San Simeon lodge as the nearest reliable base. Santa Barbara rewards a boutique hotel in the Funk Zone or State Street area. San Diego is best experienced from Coronado or La Jolla.
