Lausanne as your base. Geneva, Montreux, Château de Chillon and Lavaux UNESCO vineyards — all by train, no car, no stress.
A Lake Geneva weekend itinerary is one of the most rewarding short breaks in Europe — and one of the most underplanned. Three nights with Lausanne as your base gives you the time to do it properly: the Gothic cathedral and Ouchy lakefront on Day 1, the CGN ferry to Montreux and Château de Chillon on Day 2, and the Lavaux UNESCO vineyard terraces at golden hour before the return.
No car needed. The Swiss Travel Pass covers everything — trains, buses, the lake ferry, and most museums. Lausanne is a genuinely cosmopolitan city that most visitors fly over on their way to Geneva. This itinerary is built to show you why that's a mistake.
The best time to visit Lake Geneva for a weekend break is September. The lavender and heat of summer have passed, the lake is still warm enough to sit beside comfortably, the Lavaux vineyards are heading into harvest season, and the Alpine light in late afternoon is at its clearest. April and May are excellent alternatives — the lake awakens, the wisterias bloom along the Ouchy promenade, and the crowds are manageable. July and August work well but the lake towns fill quickly and accommodation needs booking well in advance.
For a Lake Geneva weekend, Lausanne is the correct base — not Geneva. Lausanne sits at the centre of the lake, within easy reach of Montreux, the Lavaux vineyards, and Geneva itself by fast train. It's also a more interesting city to spend time in: the Old Town, the Flon design district, and the Ouchy lakefront give you genuine evening options. Stay as close to Ouchy as possible — the CGN ferry pier, the Olympic Museum, and the lake promenade are all within walking distance.
