The Keukenhof shuttle from Leiden runs only during the park's open season (late March to mid-May) — outside that window the connection doesn't exist. The Marken Express ferry between Volendam and Marken runs approximately every 45 minutes; arriving late at the pier means a significant wait with children. And a detail worth knowing: the OV-chipkaart requires checking out as well as in — forgetting to tap out charges the maximum possible fare for that journey, automatically.
The best time to visit Holland for tulips is late March to mid-May, with peak bloom typically around mid-April. For a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds, September is excellent — warm evenings, quieter villages, and the countryside in its most atmospheric light. Summer works well year-round for cities and coast. The tulip season window is fixed and non-negotiable: if flowers are the priority, plan around mid-April specifically.
