The Overseas Highway drive to Key West takes 4 hours without stops — but the stops are the point. Build in at least 90 extra minutes for Seven Mile Bridge and the Keys islands or you'll miss what the drive is actually for. The Dry Tortugas seaplane and ferry both sell out weeks ahead in peak season: this is the one booking in the itinerary that cannot be left to chance. And a detail worth knowing about Orlando: theme park ticket prices vary by date, and the cheapest days to visit are published on each park's website — the difference can be $30–50 per person.
The best time for a Florida family road trip is October to April. Winter months offer warm but not oppressive temperatures, low humidity, and manageable crowds outside of the holiday peaks. December and January are peak family season — plan and book accordingly. March and April offer excellent weather with slightly lower prices after spring break. Avoid June to September: heat and humidity are intense, hurricane season adds uncertainty, and theme park crowds peak in summer. For the Keys specifically, September to November brings the clearest water for snorkelling and diving.
For a 2-week Florida road trip, the hotel strategy follows the route. Miami Beach: choose South Beach for proximity to Ocean Drive, the Art Deco district, and the Big Bus Tour. Key West: stay within walking distance of Duval Street — the island is small but the difference between a good and a bad location is significant at night. Gulf Coast: Clearwater Beach is the base of choice — one of the consistently top-rated beaches in the USA. Orlando: position yourself between the Disney and Universal corridors for flexibility across your theme park days.
