Miami → Florida Keys → Gulf Coast → Orlando → Miami. Beaches, tropical islands, theme parks and long open drives — two weeks of real Florida.
A 2-week Florida road trip for families is the most complete way to experience the state — and one of the most logistically complex to plan from scratch. This itinerary covers Miami Beach, the Florida Keys, the Everglades, the Gulf Coast, Orlando, and back to Miami: every driving day mapped, every hotel chosen for a reason, every transfer warned in advance.
Florida doesn't do half measures. The Keys slow everything to a crawl — which is exactly what you need after Miami. The Gulf Coast resets with white sand and calm water. Orlando fires everything back up. This itinerary is built for families who want to cover ground without burning out.
The best time for a Florida family road trip is October to April. Winter months offer warm but not oppressive temperatures, low humidity, and manageable crowds outside of the holiday peaks. December and January are peak family season — plan and book accordingly. March and April offer excellent weather with slightly lower prices after spring break. Avoid June to September: heat and humidity are intense, hurricane season adds uncertainty, and theme park crowds peak in summer. For the Keys specifically, September to November brings the clearest water for snorkelling and diving.
For a 2-week Florida road trip, the hotel strategy follows the route. Miami Beach: choose South Beach for proximity to Ocean Drive, the Art Deco district, and the Big Bus Tour. Key West: stay within walking distance of Duval Street — the island is small but the difference between a good and a bad location is significant at night. Gulf Coast: Clearwater Beach is the base of choice — one of the consistently top-rated beaches in the USA. Orlando: position yourself between the Disney and Universal corridors for flexibility across your theme park days.
