Small details that change your trip
The Positano ferry from Amalfi is faster and more scenic than driving — but it fills up, especially in August. Buy tickets at the pier the evening before, not the morning of. The Sentiero degli Dei hike should start no later than 7:30am in summer: the path is exposed, and heat and haze arrive fast. One practical note most guides don't make: pack one bag per person, not a large shared suitcase — every hotel on this itinerary involves stairs, cobblestones, or a porter who deserves a tip.

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast for couples is June and September. June offers warm water, long evenings, and the coast before the August peak. September is arguably better — the crowds thin, the light turns golden earlier, and the villages breathe again. Late May and early October also work well for those who prefer quieter roads and easier restaurant reservations. Avoid the peak of August: the ferries are crowded, the roads are slow, and the coast loses some of the intimacy that makes it special for two.

Salerno is underrated — a genuine southern Italian city with a beautiful waterfront, excellent seafood, and none of the tourist markup of the coast itself. In Amalfi, stay as close to the harbour as possible — the ferry is your main transport, and proximity to the pier saves time and energy every day.
